I Out On De Road: Section 34 Style!

No, not lemmings, just right thinking Trinbagonians defending their democracy!

I’m marching today. And happily so. When I marched weeks ago I was told by people who consider themselves thinkers, humanists and buddhists that to march meant I was Pro PNM…..and even better, marching meant I was a lemming. If Rowley was so against Section 34 why he vote for it. At that point in time no one was willing to listen to the details of the story. That Cabinet had promised to implement certain conditions and further that the early proclamation was a breach of trust.

Today, as more and more details of the section 34 issue has been revealed and more and more people realise the extent of the conspiracy perpetrated against the country all of a sudden marching has become the fashionable thing. The people who wanted to make this about Keith Rowley and the PNM a few weeks ago are going to be out on the street en masse today because that’s how bandwagonists function. They diss an action that they are not in favour of in its early phases and then when they see the direction the wind shifts in all of a sudden their intellect kicks in and they find a plausible reason for joining and become even louder and more vociferous than the original members of a movement. It’s all good, once they pulling their weight. I guess the Lemmings have company today.

But there are people who are still detractors to the march. We’ve seen the government throw up distraction after distraction where Section 34 is concerned. Pre-Budget Rallies, Post-Budget Rallies, random attacks on the media from Jack Warner and Jamal Mohammed, Warner trying to block crime statistics….all in an effort to distract the electorate from the issue of Section 34 and what it means that an entire Cabinet conspired to mislead the Parliament….and now pretending they did nothing wrong.

Last night there was a last ditch effort on the part of UNC apologists. People arguing that the issue has already aired publicly, so let’s move on. Well neither Kamla nor the AG have answered my questions on this matter satisfactorily so I can’t move on. And apparently the launch of TSTT’s 4G that was meant to thin out the protest crowds has been put off as well. So it’s just lemmings in Woodford Square at noon today.

Another argument is that this March today is about causing political destabilisation….uhhh….YES….we don’t trust the Government. No electorate should have to be saddled with a Government it doesn’t trust, and to argue that we must put up with an untrustworthy government for five years is to play smart with foolishness. That’s why it’s called a democracy….we have the right to show our displeasure and I am going to show it.

And Section 34 isn’t the only reason. There are at least a hundred…but let me refresh your memory with a few reason why I will be out on the road.

1. Reshmi

2. Gopaul

3. Mary King

4. Cheryl Miller

5. Nizam Mohammed

National Insecurity

I don’t know how many of us remember this, but the People’s Partnership came to power on a platform that campaigned against escalating crime and criminal activity. Both white collar and violent crime. If my recollection serves me well Prakash Ramadhar and Vernon de Lima were in the vanguard, acquiring birth certificates all the way from Malaysia to establish links between Calder Hart and Sunway Construction, and thus confirm for us that there were sinister links between the two. While my suspicions are that such may well be the case, there is no evidential material, beyond Sherrine Hart’s birth paper to substantiate anything, and so the party that once frothed at the mouth and chomped at the bit for Calder Hart, and by proxy, Patrick Manning’s head, have gone all but silent on Hart and white collar crime in general. Just look at the outcome of the extradition case for Galbaransingh and Ferguson or the imaginary inroads we are making into money laundering and drugs. Indeed, if we were to sit and examine their real actions where illegal activities are concerned, we’d understand what this government’s plan for our security really is.

Trinidad is a transshipment point between Latin America and North America. Let’s embrace that and move on. You’d think therefore that manning our borders, especially the ones that provide ease of access to the mainland would be a key priority under any regime. You’d also think that aerial surveillance would complement maritime border patrol. Well, under this government you’d be absolutely wrong. Because early initiatives by this government stopped the purchase of offshore patrol vessels, sold the ever controversial blimp and to date the air guard seems to be stalled. At least I don’t hear about them being a part of any crime initiative.

The appointment of the lady formerly known as Reshmi Ramnarine was yet another stage in the country’s crime plan. Get your friends to watch your back I expect. But it told me clearly that this government wasn’t remotely interested in securing the country, but is entirely interested in promoting and protecting themselves and their friends.

The appointment of Dwaynne Gibbs and Jack Ewatski as CoP and Deputy CoP respectively also seems to have helped secure this government’s ridiculous and untenable position when it comes to crime. Because of the contracts this government has signed with both men, it seems almost impossible to get rid of them lest the state face another law suit. And therein lies the rub. There is clear underperformance from Gibbs, Ewatski and the police force that the top men should be held accountable for but we can’t make them answer for anything or call for their heads the way we could a local CoP. Gibbs’s breached state laws when he spent $.9m on renting a crop duster. It appears that the probe into that has stalled and with the change in National Security Minister I seriously doubt that we’ll ever get any resolution. Further, the nation has never been told exactly how this light air craft was meant to fit into a larger crime plan. What we do know is that Jack Ewatski likes to fly. So my guess is that when the fecal matter hit the fan in January of this year, the efficient thing to do was claim the aircraft was being considered for national security purposes.

I’m also thinking too that the phrase “sting operation” must be a foreign word to Canadian crime officials. Consider how many busts you hear of where it’s only the drugs and ammunition that are seized, but never the owners. On an island as small as ours, where it’s less than six degrees of separation, there is apparently no way to figure who owns containers with frozen chicken and marijuana, or gun caches or marijuana fields. Everything owns itself here.

But perhaps the biggest blow to national insecurity has been the appointment of Jack Warner. A man with allegations of corruption hanging over his head, whose first act in his new ministry was to breach laws. It’s pretty clear in my mind that Warner had no authority to issue orders to the Chief of Defence Staff, because he’s not the commander of the Defence Force, the President is; and Max Richards has been suspiciously mum on Warner’s role in the Highway Re-Route demolition. Further, it’s the responsibility of the state land agencies here to issue eviction notices. Personnel in Lands and Surveys will tell you that it is virtually impossible to use force to evict squatters off land here. Yet Minister Warner was able to deploy both police and army, and unless my eyes have gone bad, we’ve got pictures in the public domain of soldiers, not police officers, arresting Kublalsingh. Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj must be doing cartwheels. But this has me wondering what exactly is going through the heads of our defence and crime detection personnel here when they start breaking their own rules under the directives of politicians. Surely CDS Maharaj knows better. Surely the soldiers on that demolition site knew better as well. So then why flout the laws? Using soldiers to quell a protest implies that the protesters are a threat to the state. So if citizens of the country are a threat to the country’s security, did we have a coup a few weeks ago? Is it that Warner, in his first act as MoNS, quelled an uprising? Or did he take advantage of a group of villagers and environmentalists? And why is that highway so crucial that a show of force was necessary?

Warner’s apparent abuse of state laws isn’t the first time the state, or rather this government, has turned against the state. Let’s not ignore the 2011 State of Emergency. To date we have received multiple reasons for its calling. A clear and present danger from Columbia, then from imaginary diesel bunkers in the Beetham, then twice Robocop was bold enough to want to assassinate the Prime Minister. In fact, Robocop was so silly that the first time he was caught with pictures of the PM, the AG and a few other ministers with their faces crossed off. Who wrote this script, Michael Bay? The second time around, to make their selected villains appear more heinous they made them literate. Brand new copies of Sun Tzu’s Art of War featured in the police raids. The entire assassination plot, felt like a poorly conceptualised, cliched Hollywood movie.

In fact, the more I think about our security policies and crime initiatives to date, I’m beginning to wonder if it’s not just a really bad piece of slapstick we’re caught in. Friends are hired to run high powered agencies like the SSA and FIU, air and ocean surveillance are non-existent, the top cops are accountable to no one,  men with checkered reputations responsible for our security , and the guns and drugs got here on their own steam. The difference for us though is Hollywood movies have happy endings.

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 2yrs, 11 days: Bananas, Pholourie and Cake Sales!

If in May 2010, you felt like I did, that we couldn’t possibly get a government worse than the Manning-led PNM….then you need to read the story of  Emperor Caligula, the successor of  Emperor Tiberius, who after a 2-year period of trying to keep his supporters happy and displaying political inexperience, then descended into a pattern of extravagance, cruelty, perversity and insanity.

The past two weeks have seen the 2015 elections kick off in fine style with the People’s Partnership holding rallies on two islands. In Trinidad the Right Royal Rani  allegedly accounted for all that her government has accomplished in the last two years. That rally is alleged to have cost us TT$9m and the Leader of Government Buffoonery, Rood Boi Moonilal claims that the money was raised through cake and pholourie sales. In case you missed it that’s Roodimonster pissing in your face and calling it rain.

The murder toll is now more than 170…higher than last year’s toll at the same time, and remember we had a State of Emergency from August to December in 2011 that was allegedly successful in reducing the country’s gang problem (all detainees were released uncharged); drug problems (only marijuana was seized) and gun problem (old, rusty guns were dug up in the country’s forests). In April/May 2010 the People’s Partnership had the plan for solving the crime problem in the country, they had said…..to date, 2 years later, no one is any the wiser for what this Crime Plan is…..2 years later we have a Commissioner of Police paid a huge salary and he abuses state funds to rent crop dusters for crime fighting and we don’t know how a crop duster is going to help fight crime…..this same Top Cop also overseers probes into allegedly corrupt Government Ministers like Jack Warner. And though there is an overwhelming amount of evidence and witnesses who claim Warner was involved in a Fifa bribing scandal, the Police Service under Gibb’s stewardship can’t find any evidence against Warner….Indeed even though both the Leader of the Opposition and the DPP have told the Police Service to look at Customs and Excise Laws, Inspector Totaram Dookie, who is leading the investigation hasn’t managed to come up with a thing….even though Warner had more US dollars in cash at a hotel in Trinidad than is legally allowed to any citizen of the country to have….but I am not a Police Officer, experienced investigator or Top Cop….so what I know? And in case you missed it the investigation into Warner is Gibbs and Totaram Dookie pissing in our faces and calling it rain in a Banana Republic!

This morning I see that the same government who decried CEPEP….the same government that accused the PNM of using CEPEP to keep black people in a state of dependency and need…the same government that accused the PNM of using CEPEP as a tool for squandermania….the same Government that could list for you how many hospital beds could have been built, roads repaired, houses completed, children educated, farmers compensated, how much medication could be bought with the money wasted on CEPEP has just overrun the annual CEPEP budget, and now needs to add $240m more…..Under the People’s Partnership we now have the largest CEPEP budget EVER! I beginning to see KAMLA and SQUANDERMANIA in the same sentence.

Now, I need to deviate a little. This is a country where people love their ethnic stereotypes. And partying plenty and living off CEPEP are two alleged ethnic traits, if you think I lying go read any Guardian article by Raymond Ramcharitar (and his analysis is ALWAYS spot on)….I’m beginning to see that love of fete and all things CEPEP have nothing to do with ethnicity and everything to do with culture, goals and ambition!  So, I’m waiting to see what Ramcharitar’s take will be on this.

PP supporters, instead of getting pissed over my blog posts should start asking their party of choice where is the change they asked for and ask their party to stop lying to the country, stop abusing the treasury and develop some standards!

The PM has the task of reconfiguring the Cabinet ahead of her and I am saying immediately that Devant Maharaj and Tim Goopeesingh have to be moved or fired. The missing CAL $$$$ is a huge issue and Devant has proven to be the most useless Minister of Transport ever. Time will tell if the PM will shift him around or fire him….what I do know is that Devant needs to go. Neither he nor his common sense has performed. I’m sure you heard that he “misspoke” about the CAL board approving the lease of the Prado for chairman Moonan…no one knows about approving any Prado for Moonan.

Tim Goopeesingh has brought his contempt of the teaching service into his tenure as Minister of Education. Goopeesingh reminds me of the average Trinidadian, who willing to have school function as a glorified day care for his/her child, but is deeply contemptuous of the job of teaching, and teachers in general and probably blames teachers for all that is wrong in the society. It shows in his attitude towards his job. It shows in his speeches. Goopeesingh is antagonising the teaching force with his high handed attitude and sooner or later he is going to cause teachers to lash out. The last thing Kamla needs is TTUTA to shut down the country. People could deal with TCL and OWTU strikes…but you see when they have no kindergarten to send their teenagers to when they day come…..well!

John Sandy also needs to be fired…but I am hearing the replacement is Jack Warner, and I hope that’s a bad joke, because Warner, with so many allegations of fraud and corruption hanging over his head in a sane world would have been removed from the government already, not put in charge of a country’s safety….but this is the People’s Partnership where neither Kamla, Prakash, Jack, Daaga nor Abdullah have any principles!

Things heating up in Tobago. This government knows that unless it ship in half of Caroni into Tobago and gerrymander voting lists they done loss the THA Elections to Orville London’s PNM. So they will bully London, audit accounts, find nothing and continue to subtly threaten Tobagonians…..foolish move Kamla…who are your advisers????

It’s June folks….Labour Day coming up…I can’t wait to see the show Roget has in store for us!

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 23mts, 17dys: The Delinquent Mother

The National Mother. Photo courtesy Jyoti Communications website.

Yesterday was Mother’s Day. A day that I associate with anyone, regardless of gender, who nurtures, rears, and gives care to a child. And while I thought about the men and women that have functioned as mothers in my life, I thought too about the people in charge of our government and in fact our country.

Let’s start with the National Mother and Grandmother, who, I am sure, considers herself to be a Mothering Worker!

VS Naipaul wrote a story called Maternal Instinct in his highly satirical and highly acclaimed novel Miguel Street. In it, Laura, the heroine, was a women with many children fathered by many men.

There are days I get the impression the National Mother had the country with several Child Fathers or Baby Daddies, hence the reason  the buck passing can never end with her. She doesn’t answer questions of national concern, it’s always one of the men, even when the questions are about issues that are directly linked to her, like her sister Vidwattie Newton.

Between January to May this country like it get caught in an undertow at Maracas Bay and every time we stand up to ketch weself a next wave of nonsense lick us down. In fact, I daresay that since The Keith’s Motion of No Confidence this govt has been mired in bacchanal after bacchanal, conflict after conflict… and the men who the National Mother keeps hiding behind are abusing her offspring and Kamla, typical of the mother who turns a blind eye to the abuse of her children because “the man helping out” remains silent.

Tell me on what issue has the National Mother actually spoken out on or taken a leadership role on?

Dwayne Gibbs rented a plane for $.9m, money that he had no right to use or disburse, tell me what has become of that and why, the PM hasn’t insisted that the AG put his foot down where that probe and Gibbs’ Commissionership is concerned? She is after all the head of the National Security Council so this should be an issue that concerns her and concerns her deeply. What the Crop Duster rental told us was that this government, led by Persad-Bissessar, didn’t have a crime plan in place, didn’t know procedure and protocol and were quite happy with public officials abusing public funds without being held accountable. This impression of the National Mother and her heads of household haven’t changed.

The Minister with common sense in spades!

Let’s look at Devant Maharaj, who reminds me of the surrepitiously lecherous uncle. You know, the one who always wants to hold you in that uncomfortable position on his lap for an inordinate length of time….riiiiiight! There have been a number of shitstorm clouds hovering over Maharaj’s tenure as  Minister of Transport, none more ominous than Caribbean Airlines Limited. Devant has been involved in misstep after misstep with CAL: under him a financially crippled CAL announced a profit of $200m ( a figure I was immediately sceptical about and the PP die hards called my scepticism racism); under Devant, CAL donated US$5m to the PM’s Life Fund; under Devant, previous CAL chairmen have been accused of having no common sense when it came to managing an airline; under Devant the PTSC has been accused of running a courier service for high priced prostitutes, and it is alleged that a member of the PTSC Board is running the ring…investigations still being conducted.  These are just a handful of the issues plaguing Devant; but by the 3rd or 4th complaint about Uncle Devant, shouldn’t Kamla…as mother and leader have started to ask some pointed questions herself? How exactly did she let it slide when he accused past chairmen of having no commonsense? How exactly has she managed to ignore the fact that mismanagement of CAL has happened under her government’s watch. Arthur Lok Jack, a former CAL Chairman who (according to Devant) lacked common sense, good frig up the government last week when he revealed that  more than US$100m that his board had left intact at the end of his tenure in June 2010 was now missing. A former board member, Allan Clovis, corroborated Lok Jack’s statement. Now Devant is calling for a report on the missing millions and I guess we should believe that he doesn’t know what’s going on with the airline under his purview, and further to that, that Rabindranath Moonan, who was appointed chairman because he possessed common sense by the tonne, also knows nothing about the missing millions? And in all of this the PM is silent and invisible. This isn’t buses and cars….this is the national airline, something that is crucial not just to Trinidad and Tobago but to the wider Caribbean….and not one word from the National Mother….maybe if we gave her a fleet of CAL jets to aid her constant travel she’d have more to say.

Prakash Ramadhar is another parent in this partnership who has me concerned. Most voters in 2010 had hoped that the COP would be the partner that maintained reason, honour, integrity and credibility in this political marriage. In short, we hoped the COP would be the sort of parent we could run to for sane judgement in a time of crisis. Yet we have the COP supporting the UNC in all kinds of questionable decisions Reshmi, SoE, Vidwattie…notice the rhyme scheme), but then getting their panties tied up in knots over a Mayorship.  Prakash has turned out to be just as wobbly and weak a leader as Winston Dookeran. He blows hot and cold at the same time and seems prone to telling either side, whether it’s Kamla or his supporters, precisely what they want to hear. Praksh is precisely the sort of fence sitter that I like to avoid….because he’ll see abuse and justify it as necessary for the child’s  development!

Tim “the tool man”…..i’ll stop there….

Then there’s Tim…..what to not say about Tim Goopeesingh boy? This is a man who spent his previous term in office with the UNC under a fog of suspicion for many things: ghost gang doctors; RHA monies missing; heart and dialysis machines missing and ending up in private hospitals; RHA budget being used to pay for his family’s regular restaurant bills….all of these accusations were being levelled at Goopeesingh, yet Kamla, in her wisdom, as National Mother felt that this is precisely the sort of man she wanted to expose to the nation all over again and this time in education.

He has turned out to be abrasive, aggressive and exclusive in his approach to much of what he is doing at the Ministry. Stakeholders are complaining that they are not a part of the decision making process as regards the SEA exam….a crucial part of our education system. Further, Tim has taken to antagonising teachers now. Openly complaining about perks and benefits that teachers, their union and the Ministry of Education would have collectively agreed on and adding fuel to already tense situations. The latest furore is that the format of the SEA exam is about to change in 2013. 1 year’s notice to change an exam that makes or breaks the future of most children and citizens here. If this transition isn’t handled properly this current government could be damaging the future of the nation’s education system…and I am once again reminded of Kamla’s tenure as Education minister when secondary education for all was instituted and the government she served rushed to rent unventilated buildings to put children in. It was under her tenure as minister that knives, forks and flatware went missing from the ministry and had to be returned.

When the UNC described Kamla as the mother of the nation in 2010, the images conjured was of a responsible caregiver, here to nurture, not boof; encourage, not dictate. Instead the type of mother we have gotten smacks of someone who got pregnant too young. We got a National Mother who more interested in shopping, travelling and dressing up….we got a National mother who lies, abuses state funds and when caught sleeping on the job puts the responsibility on the men around her.

I think we should award Kamla as Delinquent National Mother of the Year! Party hard, grandma….you rock on with yuh bad self!

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 23 months:

In 2005, the current PM, then in Opposition announced that her party, the UNC was not in support of the CCJ and her reason was that there was no ethnic parity. I know it might escape the members of this government….but Indo-Caribbeans do not make up 40 or even 50%  of the Caribbean’s population. The Indian population lucky if it makes up 20% of the Caribbean demographic…yet here in Trinidad every day we have to grapple with an Indo-population that seems to forget that there are many other ethnic groups that exist here. As recently as last year when questioned on making the switch to the CCJ the PM said there was no need to, her government was not in any rush to dump the Privy Council, and every one knew it was because they were afraid of losing investors, as happened to Guyana when they made a similar move.

Yet as of yesterday, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, now Prime Minister, is busily embracing the CCJ, but only for criminal matters and therein lies the problem for many others in the local legal fraternity. This partial move to the CCJ has been described as illegal, unlawful and unworkable by many in the legal fraternity. Former AG John Jeremie is quoted in the Express as saying, ‘in any “criminal case” a constitutional point might arised and be argued. “It is artificial to speak about abolishing the Privy Council for criminal appeals only,” because criminal matters could have a civil dimension, he said. ‘

Another former AG, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, has weighed in as well on the issue revealing that when he went to London in 1999 the Privy Council was not in support of a piecemeal split, but a total split:  He recalled that when he went to London in 1999 to get the approval of the British Government because the British Government had to decide whether they would keep the civil jurisdiction if the country wanted to do away with the Privy Council as the final court for the criminal jurisdiction. “We were told that they were not prepared to do that”. He said the Privy Council was quite happy to do get rid of the jurisdiction altogether, they were not prepared to accept the phased proposal.”And that was known by the present Prime Minister, because she was a member of the Cabinet” he said.

If both instances citied above are true, that splitting the final courts of appeal will cause problems for Civil and Criminal matters; and further, that the PM knows that the Privy Council won’t support this….why is she proposing this? Because clearly it won’t be a successful proposal.  It makes one wonder how exactly the PM and the AG got their silk in light of the various legal arguments that are flying about.

Meanwhile, the AG is asserting that these comments being made are mischievous and that there is “precedent in the Commonwealth” for a phased withdrawal.

So,  naturally, I have to wonder, like De Bas, if Kamla’s absence from parliament during the revelation of the use of state funds for her travel assistant/nurse sister, and her miraculous appearance to announce a half way move to the CCJ is not really another ploy to distract from her government’s abuses. Because now several things are in train, there is heated debate nationally about whether the nation wants to leave the Privy Council or not, there are cries for a referendum….that a yellow donkey and God face you aint seeing under this government, they are not about serving the people….and public scrutiny of the TT$.9m spent on Ms Vidwattie Newton has now gone to the back burner. The Prime Minister’s claims too that she needs Opposition support on this issue…yet if it is a flawed plan and The Keith decides not to support it in Parliament the UNCOP Govt will be quick to claim that the PNM doesn’t want autonomy….when in truth and in fact the issue will be that the partial move may not be a workable plan. I think Kamla and her small goal team being a bunch of tricksy little orcsessssss on this issue…gollum, gollum!

4 people have been murdered over a 24-hour period…..not a word from the government about their crime plan of late….only 21st century policing from Gibbs….and anyone remember that he didn’t have the authority to rent that $.9m Crop Duster? Whatever happened to that issue? The AG stop probing it? Like he stop probing Jack Warner and the Fifa scandal?

In the business sector issues of race, coupled with unequal pay and corporate crime continue to hamper our economic growth. When you see things like this you wish that the government spent less time trying to muzzle the media and the Opposition, (and making stupid tasteless jokes a la Roodal Moonilal) and focus on actually running the country efficiently….but that would require having a plan that’s broader and more complex than draining the treasury, wouldn’t it?

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 22mts, 18dys: PR Spinning out of Control

The Star Players in the Pantomime today: Minister of Works, Jack Warner; fmr UNC Leader, Basdeo Panday and CAL's Head Flight Attendant, Kamlarani. Photo courtesy Trinidad and Tobago News website.

I am absolutely convinced that the Govt’s PR team setting them up for a fall. Have you been hearing the radio ads of the last two days? There is an ad fashioned to sound like a news bulletin letting the country know that massive road programmes are scheduled to begin soon….3000 jobs will be created.
About a month ago, when the Marlene Coudray issue became a hot button topic the PM waved 2 beakers of oil, announced that God was a Trini, better times were ahead, things were turning around. Within 24 hours of that manufactured oil find….(Yes, Gillette, we know it manufactured…and we know it pissing you off that we know and figured it out….)…Energy and economic  experts thoroughly trashed the idea of the “oil find” having any sort of real impact. That got deflated fast.

Now, in light of the ongoing TCL Strike, Mayorgate (Marlene aint going nowhere), St Ann’sGate and regular concerns about the PM’s spending sprees and government nepotism….we have road jobs to look forward to.

Who them tactics remind you of? I mean seriously, Jack and Kamla, 3000 jobs to help build highways supposed to make us feel relieved after 3 years of economic stagnancy? And this week there was a story about low natural gas prices…..all yuh goose cooked!

And the best your PR team can come up with is to make ads that sound like faux news reports….to add legitimacy, nah?

And as for St Ann’sGate, aka Miller Time, well this thing just getting stickier and stickier….even the Judge saying her looking at process and procedure, ’Kokaram said: “The wider issue I am interested in: is what does an employer do when an employee has a mental breakdown in the workplace?”’ BOOOM!
So all this bending over backwards to reveal Miller’s diagnosis, Fuad, and you Verna, telling the media she is unwell….that’s just poor form. The thing you guys should have done since last Friday when it was revealed that Miller was detained under Section 15 of the MHA, was to begin to discreetly negotiate and settle with Miller. What was perpetrated on Miller, the stealthy abduction and admission into a government facility, complete with the admission of drugs and bad procedure is the stuff of psychological thrillers and nightmares. You’ve soiled your hands good and proper here. And regardless of what is said about Miller after this, the country is always going to remember your government, as the one in charge when this crime was perpetrated against a public servant. Your constant cries that Manning is a Dictator (and mind you, it’s The Keith at the helm now, eh) ring hollow, because this act, that the world tends to associate with Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany and Taliban Afghanistan happened under your watch….and its your ministers and your government that’s trying to effect a cover up on what can only be described…from all angles…as an extreme violation of human rights….no one going to remember the just-as-culpable Perm Secs….just Fuad, Verna and your deafening silence.

Road works can’t make that go away!

I wondering too if the PNM and all lost its way with its PR and spin….PNM Abroad spends a lot of time bussing files via FB. For the most part you can depend on the video clips and newspaper links they post to give information or even another side to a story…but of late their tone has shifted from simple PR and propaganda to gossip….and don’t make the mistake of pointing this out to them…then you get told if you aint like it, then lay down side it.

ME: I wish your posts were generally more mature and responsible. Often you spund [sic] like a gossip column in a rag newspaper instead of a source of solid info…when Anil going to cross the floor again? I waiting on the official announcement 3 weeks now.

PNM Abroad: We don’t have to repeat our TRACK RECORD our loyal members know it. We have NO INTENTION of changing the format. It has served us well for the last 2 years and 10 months and the FACTS have always fallen in our favour. I guess it just redbuds back to excellent political analysis.

ME: …my issue is responsibility in information dissemination. Yes this is a pro party group, but its approach likely to turn off the very people it should be trying to attract. And your report on the helicopters aint new. Daily ppl call in radio stations with sightings, so this is no scoop. Try and work on determining a standard.

PNM Abroad: Its simple-if people do not like what we say or how we put it- just either leave or don’t come on site. We don’t force anybody here. In fact however, we know very well our members tastes,we know their demographics,we know our phenomenal growth rate, our reach, and we know our track record on most issues has been exemplary. (not all-just most). We are not about to worry about fighting anyone.

The comments from other posters were deleted because they were irrelevant to this thread, but really, is this the position that PNM  wants out there? We doing we thing, and it working for our demographic and we sticking to it! So what about the people who fall out of your demographic that you might want to attract? Narrow approach much? Considering the drubbing the party’s image received in the 2010 election is this really the route you wish to go?

I see Prakash Ramadhar getting hot and sweaty ForCop these days…meetings after meetings and nothing about Mayorgate cyah resolve. Ramadhar insisting that the main issue is the San Fernando Mayorship issue, the PM saying otherwise and in the middle of talks she have to buss out to ketch ah plane! I hear Vidwattie stay home on this trip…So who attending to the PM’s Special Needs? Nobody? The Needs disappear? Or they on hold until we stop paying attention????

Activist Wayne Kublalsingh and Mon Desir residents put down a nice piece of protest on the EMA yesterday. Activists and villagers picketed the EMA office in order to get CEC’s that will determine whether or not the highway carded to pass through Mon Desir has actually gottten approval.

No lawyer wants to defend the taxi driver who formed the paedophile ring in Claxton Bay.

Volney the Sour Care Bear under fire for his loose cannon comments yesterday.

Deputy Police Commissioners who resemble Sandy, not Gibbs and Ewatski, were sent into Mt D’Or to have peace talks with residents….this govt jokey for truth, oui….one minute they bawling for ethnic parity and then when it suits them they use ethnicity as part of their crime plan….speaking of Crime Plan, we up to 107 murders for the year, last year was 117 (so thank God for that SoE, it was a real success), what is really the Crime Plan besides the Crop Duster????

Is Friday folks, and I have to tell you I didn’t believe St Ann’sGate woulda still been the lead story given the speed of our news cycles. But the state attacking a public servant was always going to be a huge issue.

I will leave you with a quote from meh boy….the one and only De Bas!

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 22mts, 16dys: Bullies and Back-Pedallers!

Fitzgerald Hinds, legal counsel for Cheryl Miller and opposition Senator.

I hear Fitzie naming Verna bold bold in a radio interview clip on news this morning and I read the comments from the head of the Public Service in the Express this morning and mankind and womankind reaching for tarpaulin to  cover their ass. It appears that the Perm Sec in Gender Affairs only raise the issue after the mark buss in the media…..Sandra Jones, something as important as committing a colleague to St Ann’s you aint even write an e-mail, much less a report on this issue? Wait….is so immune you is Sandra? You don’t even have to inform your superiors about so important a decision? But the Public Service is a dangerous place to work??????

Fitzie saying he never call the media vultures….and Fitzie I hope you aint backpedalling now too, eh!

Senior Counsel Stanley Marcus is urging Health Minister Fuad Khan to hush… but Fuad, is days now I telling you hush. Is days now I telling you that you can’t be discussing Cheryl Miller business in such a casual and cavalier manner…so much years you is a doctor, you never learn bout doctor/client confidentiality? Quit the Cheryl Miller Smear Campaign….it done looking bad that your ministry involved in this debacle…do the right thing!

So the Min of Health meeting with everybody that was involved today, to get their stories straight. And Cheryl Miller has been advised to stay at home….until the case resolved….Wait, is send they sending Cheryl home? She on suspension? Holiday? No-pay leave? Look, this is the public service….define the leave all yuh asking/telling/demanding Miller take.

I beginning to feel really sorry for the senior members of the Public Service, because at every turn in this issue they are revealing themselves to be inept, bumbling fools. This issue is fast becoming a PR nightmare that’s going to haunt them for years, if not decades to come…..

spate of murders happened in a 24-hr period, the murder toll is now 100, according to the Newsday’s tally. The Guardian reports 5 murders over a 24-hr period. Repeat after me, “The SoE was a success!”

Deputy Commissioner of Police is busy defending the 21st Century Policing Plan…that managed to catch 20 ppl over the weekend for drunk driving and traffic offences. I wish we could get a Crime Plan that dealt with the issues plaguing our society in a multi-pronged way….sighhhhhhh.

Then it seems as if sexual crimes against children are back in the news. A  two-year-old girl was sexually abused before her death, and police aren’t ruling out murder.

And it appears that there is a ring of paedophiles in Claxton Bay, ranging from the ages of 13 to 51.

So, question, Minister St Rose Greaves, when exactly is this government going to table the Children’s Bill in parliament. More than 6 weeks ago Minister Roodal Moonilal claimed that the PNM’s Motion of No Confidence was the reason the Bill couldn’t be tabled. Surely enough weeks have passed….surely our parliament’s time can be taken up debating this Bill rather than listening to Anand and Roodal lie and dishonour the reputation of private citizens and former public servants.

So, when you aren’t standing by watching your PS bully weaker members of staff….can you please try and table the Bill?

Partnership talks are due to resume tomorrow, as Prakash Ramadhar flies in to talk peace. Look out for more back pedalling and bicycle wining, look out for Ramadhar et al protecting their few remaining positions of power…look out for total surrender to the UNC after 2 weeks of grandcharge that lead to no where.

It’s Monday folks, Mt D’or still vex about Atiba Duncan’s murder and Shoppin Toppin have to answer questions before her party for abusing the Govt credit card. The week now start…..the game of thrones continues!

TWICKS (This Week In Clusterf@$KS): The Empress and the Top Shopper!

The PM.

It seems each week that the Politics and the Crimes here take on new levels…my jaw running out of floor to hit!

In the aftermath of the Motion of No-Confidence(MONC) the issues that would pre-occupy the national consciousness this week were:

  • Cpt Gallery Griffith was abusive to an Opposition MP,
  • Reshmi Ramnarine has changed her name and was/has been allegedly employed within a Govt Ministry again
  • Minister Vernella Alleyne-Toppin has abused the privilege of the Govt Travel Card.

Minister of Tobago Affairs Mrs Vernella Alleyne-Toppin. Photo courtesy govt.org website.

Now the interesting thing in all of this is that many people who often stood up for and spoke out against corruption, malfeisance and abuse under the past PNM regime have been virtually mum this week. Not a comment was made….even more interesting were the comments of people who saw nothing wrong with Minister Toppin using the card in ways for which it was not intended. The rules and guidelines are all there. The card is to be used for international travel, and even though Mrs Toppin is from Tobago, surely she remembers that it is a twin-island republic and knows that Trinidad does not count as international travel. Further, the card is not to be used for withdrawals except when overseas. The various newspapers and radio-programmes this week have painted a picture of total abuse of the card from June to Dec 28th, 2011. In Parliament, Roodal Moonilal fell for the trap created by the Opposition when The Keith said he had receipts to the tune of $4000. Moonilal crowed cockily about what was $4000? And the amount has been paid off in full. By Tuesday of this week we knew that the actual amount was $68,000.00 and that Toppin was in deed and fact overdrawn on the card, whose limit is US$10,000.00.

Toppin, following the examples set by her Prime Minister and other govt colleagues  spent the majority of the week ducking the media, and instead claiming she had to attend to her ailing husband….is this the same husband who it is alleged functions as her personal driver and is so in receipt of a government salary? When she eventually emerged from attending to her husband, her response was to send a press release to CNMG in which she indicated that she was not aware that she had done anything wrong. In short, Shoppin Toppin is using ignorance of the law as her defence. But it’s stupidly ingenuous if only because she has to sign a document that iterates all the rules of the card. So is Toppin saying that she signed off on the card and never read the rules? Is she saying that as a Govt Minister she is allowed to abuse the system out of ignorance and not have to deal with the consequences?
It is alleged that many of the withdrawals at ATMs were done by a close relative of Toppin’s and if anyone were to ever get the ATM video footage we might find out who precisely has been using this Govt Travel card all over the country. When reached for comment, the PM insists that the card has been paid off, ignoring the fact that the issue is not the amount owed on the card, but the flouting of the rules and conditions that show that Shoppin Toppin and the government that supports her are capable of corruption and turning a blind eye to it.

What troubles the Pantomime about this is the message it sends. This Govt is corrupt, doesn’t care and won’t do better. In fact, when a member does wrong, the other members will rush to defend and protect the wrongdoer….all in an attempt to retain its hold on power.

When people voted for the COP, it was hoped that its presence in the Government would provide the voice of reason and restraint and ensure such things didn’t occur under a UNC that everyone saw as predatory and parasitic….instead the COP has turned out to be the greatest disappointment…..the Trojan Horse that brought this UNC into Govt….the date rape drug to end all date rape drugs.

The Commish!

If Shoppin Toppin’s abuse of the public coffers wasn’t enough, we then had issue with Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs being told that he was wrong to rent a plane to the tune of TT$.9m. Mind you, this is in the aftermath of AG Ramlogan gallerying heself in Parliament and saying that Gibbs had full authority to sign off on a deal and that Gibbs didn’t have to answer to anyone on the matter of how much he spent because he was in total control of his budget. Now, weeks later we are hearing from the Solicitor General that Gibbs was in the wrong…..Am I to assume then that the AG didn’t know what he was speaking about? Then what’s his purpose? Isn’t he supposed to be providing legal advice to the Government? If he doesn’t know the laws then how can he do his job? Why are we paying him a salary?

The AG.

Another nasty thing happened this week too that involved the AG. The former SAUTT Head’s reputation was attacked under the cover of Parliament. The AG implied that Brig Peter Joseph ( a man that the govt had to shell out $1m to in legal matters surrounding his dismissal if I’m not mistaken) was incompetent and that SAUTT was malfunctioning. Under the cover of Parliament the AG can say all of these things without providing any evidence. But a high ranking source within SAUTT has accused the AG of lying. What’s new with this govt? If is not a lie is a misstep, or a misspoke, or a let’s move on, or an I did nothing wrong!

The PM and her sister, Vidwatie Newton. Photo courtesy Express news site.

The latest scandal coming from the Prime Minister is three-fold. Apparently the Prime Minister’s sister is he travel advisor; and when questioned the Prime Minister, not even acknowledging the flagrant nepotism involved…the same nepotism that she said her government was against on the campaign platform in 2010….defended her actions by saying she needs her sister. Mind you, it’s the taxpayers again that have to shoulder the cost of the PM’s needs…and Mrs Vidwatie Newton has been costing the country a pretty penny on each international trip she makes with her sister.

Even Kamla’s neighbours are complaining about the helicopters, the parties…and her razor wire fence!

The latest issue that should cause concern too is the PM’s comment that Executive Presidency is on the table for her government….the same Executive Presidency that she campaigned and railed against when the PNM was in power? Will it be an Executive Presidency a la the US where there is a Congress and a Supreme Court to keep the President in check….or will it be like Guyana’s? A system that is malfunctioning and only favours a limited section of the society? Talk to us Prime Minister dearest? Are we also switching to proportional representation? Is your government going to make all of these changes under cover of night and then inform the country?

Another issue that also remains out of the spotlight but is a burning issue is the matter of Tobago and Internal Self Government….the Central Govt is interfering….they’ve issued a greenpaper on the matter that raises questions about who qualifies as Tobagonian and what qualifies as the land mass that is Tobago…this greenpaper, spearheaded by Attorney General Ramlogan (why does his name keep cropping up????) has implications for Tobagonians, their land and their self-governance….the Pantomime watching how this issue panning out.

In the midst of all of these issues the world celebrated International Women’s Day….I thought of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Vernella Alleyne-Toppin, Norma Greaves and most of the women we have in Parliament on both the government and opposition sides and considered a sex change….then I called my mother…and all was right with the world again.

This was a tough week to be Trinbagonian. The govt continues to be glib, corrupt and uncaring. The light at the end of the tunnel seems to get more and more distant simply because De Vice Cyah Done!

Crime Clusterf@$k/Political Pantomime 21mts, 12dys: Vernella the Top Shopper!

Well the Pantomime get up this morning thinking Louis the Umpteenth was going to be she biggest story and realise the Shoppin Toppin hit Louis Leak King out the park!

Imagine my shock and wonder when I hear Tony and Dale read out Vernella Toppin’s Govt Credit card statement on the radio this morning and realise that Vernella the Top Shopper swiping card and withdrawing from ATMs to the tune of $68,048.38 by December 2011.
The card limit is $63,000.00….so Shoppin Toppin in overdraft and the way that credit card getting used all over Trinidad and Tobago I wondering if is Vernella alone using the card?

If this card is only for overseas use, why is Toppin shoppin so muuch locally? And considering that MPs have a vote for entertainment and expense…what exactly is Toppin using all that money for? Is it Toppin alone using the $$$?

Leader of Govt business Roodal Moonilal: Thinks its no big deal Alleyne-Toppin has been using the credit card locally.

And let we discuss Roodimonster a little bit. When The Keith announced Toppin’s spending habits in Parliament Roodal Moonilal jumped to his feet and scoffed at The Keith, ridiculed him, because as far as he and the People’s Panchayat concerned, “What’s the big deal?” and “She pay it back already!”. Well Roodal, the point that you might be missing is that what Shoppin Toppin doing is wrong….not immoral…but illegal. If the rules for the card states that it’s use is restricted to international travel then you have a government MP who is wilfully and knowledgeably breaking laws and a Govt that is supporting it. In short, the Kamla Persad-Bissessar Govt is supporting corrupt and illegal behaviour. This is the type of governance that Prakash Ramadhar, David Abdullah, Ashworth Jack and Makandal Daaga are in support of!  A govt that abuses its privileges and when it’s pointed out it lies, denies and justifies to the population…..I expect that the defence will be the PNM do it, so we could do it too! Ent Kamla? Ent Roody? Ent Prakash?

The Commish under more heat for this Crop Duster plane. Everyday the Gibbs saga gets thicker and juicier and you cyah hear a word from the AG, ppl resembling Sandy or the PM…you swear Gibbs hire heself and land here! Now Gibbs on the verge of legal action over the toy plane he rent. And now even the US Embassy involved as they conducting their own probe in Daniel Condon, the man who help negotiate the deal between TT Air Support Company and Gibbs. Now folks, remember weeks ago when this mark buss the AG said that Gibbs was well within his right to sign off on a plane rental for $.9m and this week we find out is only $100,000 Gibbs could spend without asking permission. What really going on in this place? How so many people in high positions in govt flouting and abusing rules, positions and power so? Is it any wonder that we rank so poorly on Transparency International?

Internationally the perception is that we are corrupt and apathetic about fraud. And it starts at the top! Does the govt even care?

The Emperor Mayor has been granted a stay of execution...

And it is for all these reasons that Louis the Leak King cyah even make the top of the news!
Imagine big meeting went down in the Balisier House yesterday to decide whether Emperor Mayor Louis the Umpteenth should remain as Mayor!
After Louis score that magnificent own goal last week, he get a No-Confidence Motion in he pweffen this week and The Keith give Louis a lesson in how to deal with dissent…..you sit and have a meeting…….
Now Louis looking like a jester and The Keith is the benevolent leader.

But the Pantomime is grateful that the mayor has received a stay of execution, because now the blog can remain non-partisan. Thanks Louis, yuh take ah hit for the team!

Enquiring minds want to know what the final deal was though?

What yuh bargain?
2 Mercedes annually for the PNM Raffle and free radio ads until elections 2015?
Whisper in yuh gyul ears nah?
I wanna know….
